Well, It's been a while. Let me give you a recap of what we've been up to here since last fall. Last October Andrew Vanwyngarden of MGMT was here tracking songs for a movie. In November Bad Girlfriend tracked basics with Aaron Phenning (Chairlift) producing and Matt Boynton engineering. Also Kurt Vile was in for tracking with Matt on his new record that came out a few months ago, "Waking On a Pretty Daze." In December MGMT was in the studio to track vocals and for their new record. Also in December Kurt Vile was back to mix "Shame Chamber" off his new record with Matt. In January Free Blood was back at the studio putting final touches on their mixes. In February Zachary Cale was in the studio to track songs for his new record that just came out. In March Andrew Vanwyngarden was back to finish mixes for the film music he tracked with Matt back in October. Jolie Holland was in at the end of March to track basics for a new record with Doug Jenkins engineering. In April Carsick Cars was in recording and mixing a new record with Pete Kember aka Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3) producing and Matt Boynton engineering. And finally in June and July Matt produced a new record for Hospitality on Merge records. So, no, we didn't disappear. We've just been working.

Summer is over. Bummer. We had a good time though, right?
It's been busy as usual here at Vacation Island. In June, Matt Boynton mixed a track for Rainbow Arabia, with more to come this month. He also finished the new Vietnam record. Look for it early next year on Mexican Summer. Free Blood was back for more mixing with Matt. Matt's Rockaway Beach neighbors, Wild Yaks mixed their latest with him, due out on Earnest Jenning Record Co. In July, Matt was busy tracking a bit more. He started out recording some new songs for Zach Cale. Hospitality tracked and mixed two new songs with Boynton. Look for that to come out on Merge Records. Kurt Vile was back at the studio in between tour dates to track a new song with Matt Boynton and Rob Laakso. Finally in July, Fred Nicolaus of Department of Eagles mixed his solo release with Boynton. So far this month, Boynton tracked a new song for UK artist Amy Studt. The Vaccines, also from the UK on Columbia Records, tracked and mixed a new song with Boynton while in Williamsburg in between shows on tour.

Well folks, summer is here and what a relief. We've been working really hard here at Vacation Island. In the past few months Matt Boynton has been spending a lot of time making a new record with Vietnam for Mexican Summer. Right now he's finishing up all the overdubs and mixing. Well it hasn't been that bad but I can't wait for spring. Busy as usual here at Vacation Island. First, Matt Boynton finished mixing for Suckers. We're very excited about their latest "Candy Salad" which has just been announced by French Kiss here. Boynton also mixed more songs from Free Blood and finished the "Hangman Letters EP" and a couple singles from Zachary Cale. Linfinity mixed their newest record with Matt in December. In late January Manican Party came to the studio to mix with Matt as did El Dorado. The dead room got a face lift. Be sure to check out the new pictures. Finally, Vacation Island Recording was chosen as the focus for Sean Cooper's article "The Brief Histories & Modern Journey of a Vinyl Record" for the Brooklyn Rail. It's a very informative article describing each stage of the recording process from recording to mixing to mastering and pressing vinyl.

Well, it's the end of the year and a lot has happened here in the past few months. Starting back in September Talk Normal mixed their latest with Christina Files engineering. Next, Matt Boynton did some more tracking with Golden Animals. Free Blood was back to finish up tracking and do some mixing with Boynton. Suckers were in the studio with Matt Boynton producing and engineering their latest for French Kiss. Matt also mixed Lucy Michelle's newest release. Engineer Anthony "Rocky" Gallo has been coming by here and there to track drums in between Matt's sessions. Finally, Zach Cale mixed his latest EP with Matt Boynton so look for that release on All Hands Electric. Summer has been pretty crazy. A lot of recording time and a lot of beach time. First of all, Matt Boynton/Vacation Island Recording was interviewed for Sound on Sound. The article is about the studio scene in Williamsburg. We were proud to be one of the studios chosen to represent the Williamsburg neighborhood. Check it out here. Now for the music... We are excited to have had Black Dice in the studio recording and mixing their latest with Matt Boynton producing and engineering. Matt tracked and mixed two more songs for Tearist. Golden Animals have also been working on an upcoming release with Matt. Christina Files was in the studio tracking a new record for Talk Normal with Rob Laakso assisting. Rob has also been plugging away with the studio's new mastering facilities.
Finally, Vacation Island Recording was proud to be a part of Recorded for Japan. Recorded for Japan is a compilation album containing songs recorded between April 2011 and June 2011 to aid the victims of the the earthquake, resulting tsunami, and nuclear emergency that happened on March 11th, 2011 in Japan. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this compilation will go directly towards the recovery and reconstruction effort, specifically the Japanese Red Cross Society. Recorded For Japan features the contributions of the following artists: Acrylics, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, Beige, Chairlift, Erika Spring, Ice Choir, Kurt Vile, K. Heasley, Pablo Picasso, Patrick Cleandenim, Regal Degal, R. Stevie Moore (feat. members of MGMT) The Swirlies, and Violens. The majority of the songs on Recorded for Japan were recorded and mastered here at Vacation Island Recording studio, Brooklyn, NY, and otherwise recorded by the artists themselves. Artwork by Max Schneider. This album has been a genuine group effort, made possible by the generosity of the artists and labels involved.

THIS YEAR SO FAR (posted 7 February 2011 by matt)
2010 was a great year for us! We started with a major studio expansion. Next, was collaboration with Gibby Haynes and Psychic Ills, we completed mixing with Dream Diary, we did a full month of recording and mixing with My Best Fiend, we mixed a song for Kurt Vile, we recorded and mixed the new Arbouretum record, the list goes on. 2011 has a lot to live up to.
So far, 2011 has been busy at Vacation Island Recording. We finished up mixing a new record for Girls In Trouble. After that, Beirut mixed their latest record with Griffin Rodriguez. Soft Landing (members of Beirut) also tracked a few songs with Griffin in January.
